This is an old revision of the document!

Before you buy, look closely at the thickness of the wear layer. A thicker wear layer means you can sanding and refinishing in the future, adding to the life of your floor. Don't forget to maintain humidity in a stable range all year long.

During the heating season, the air inside can become too dry, causing natural wood to contract and small gaps to appear. Using a humidifier keeping humidity in a moderate range benefits your floors and your health.

Moisture control is a second major role, especially on concrete slabs. A concrete slab often releases humidity for years, and an underlay with a built-in vapour barrier helps protect laminate and wood floors from damage.

When planning a flooring project, they usually focus on the colour, style and the price per square foot. Yet what lies beneath your planks plays an equally important role. A good underlayment can improve how the floor feels, sound and protection against moisture, while it helps your new floor last longer.

Lately, luxury vinyl plank has become one of the most popular floor coverings in Canada. There are good reasons for that: it delivers a beautiful wood look, it stands up to spills, and it works with a wide range of budgets.

That is exactly where engineered hardwood really shines. Rather than using a single solid piece of wood, engineered wood is made of several layers: a top layer of real wood glued over a stable core. That construction reduces seasonal movement.

Can you still have hardwood? It is possible, though be selective. Harder species like hickory and white oak hold up better, while low-sheen finishes or distressed or hand-scraped textures disguise everyday wear better than a shiny finish.

Its first role is to provide acoustic insulation. Floating floors often sound hollow without a good underlay. A good acoustic underlay reduces that hollow sound, which is especially important in condos where building rules frequently demand minimum sound ratings.

Ceramic and porcelain tile remains very water-resistant, but it can feel chilly unless you add in-floor heating. Carpet, on the other hand, adds comfort but can trap moisture, so area rugs are often a better solution.

Canadian homes face significant humidity changes throughout the year. During winter, furnaces dehydrate the air; in summer, moisture levels rise sharply. For wood floors, that constant movement often leads to gaps, crowning and movement.

Laminate is also a good contender. Its protective top layer is highly resistant to scratches, sometimes more than vinyl. Select a laminate with an AC4 or AC5 rating as well as water-resistant features for the best performance.

Turning a basement into living space is an excellent way to gain extra square footage and comfort in your house. However lower levels come with unique challenges: cold concrete, humidity plus colder floors. The wrong floor often causes mildew, warping and costly repairs.

What you get is simply flooring that feels just like real hardwood while stays more stable in our climate. Because it moves less, engineered hardwood can be used in rooms where solid wood would struggle, such as below-grade rooms and over radiant heating.

A good underlay also hides small irregularities in the base while provides a little softness underfoot. Remember, however, it is not a substitute for levelling the subfloor: large dips and bumps should be levelled before installation.

Vinyl plank is widely considered the go-to floor Visit Sugoidesu.net for lower levels. Most vinyl products are water-resistant, meaning they will not be damaged when humidity happens. SPC and WPC vinyl can also hide minor imperfections in the concrete. Before anything else, check the moisture level of the concrete. A simple test like taping a square of plastic onto the slab for 24 to 48 hours can show any moisture problem. Solve drainage issues prior to installing new flooring.

If you share your home with dogs, cats or young children, you have probably learned how quickly floors suffer. Pet nails, toy cars and blocks, juice spills and wet paws will scratch a poorly chosen floor in a few months. Luckily: current flooring options are designed to handle everyday chaos.

LVP is often the number one pick for families. It's waterproof, so pet accidents are easy to clean up. A strong wear layer will help resist scratches from claws, and its softer feel feels less noisy for running feet and paws.

Engineered wood can also work when you prefer natural wood. Because of its layered construction, engineered wood resists moisture swings much better than solid wood, and solid wood is not recommended on concrete. Use an appropriate underlay for the best results.

Salt residue often leaves a white film that can etch the protective layer of hardwood, laminate and vinyl. Clean salty puddles quickly using a damp microfibre mop together with a floor-specific cleaner. Avoid soaking the floor on hardwood and laminate.

Everything starts at the entrance. Use a sturdy outdoor mat and an absorbent mat inside every entrance. This combination catches the majority of the dirt and salt before it can scratch your flooring. Add a waterproof tray so wet boots aren't left directly on the floor.
