A pond does not need the same attention in January as it does in June, and treating every month the same is one of the more common mistakes among UK pond owners. Maintenance priorities move with the seasons, and understanding that rhythm applies whether the pond is a swim pond, a wildlife pond or a koi pond.
For anyone who has owned a pond for a few years without a formal check-up, or who has recently taken on a garden with an existing pond of unknown history, an audit is a sensible starting point. It gives a documented picture of where the pond stands today, which then informs any decision about ongoing maintenance or further work, rather than committing to a fix before the actual problem has been identified.
Ponds near deciduous trees are naturally more exposed to this, and netting is one of the more straightforward ways to intercept leaves before they reach the water at all, provided it is checked and cleared regularly rather than left to sag under its own weight. For ponds without netting, or where some leaves inevitably get through, regular skimming through autumn keeps the volume of matter reaching the base to a minimum.
