The Department of Enhanced Inquiry, or DEI, is the arm of Imperial bureaucracy tasked with keeping tabs on the magic-users of the realm. Founded in 876, following the Rebellion of the Grand Wizard Stanag, which depopulated and split off Sickos Island from the mainland, it is a secretive and highly dogmatic group of assassins and spies. Their job is to make sure wizard's don't get any ideas that are too bright–and if they do, employ them in the service of the Empire. This means DEI agents have a fairly good idea where every mage is at most times.
