Summer brings the highest algae risk of the year. Long daylight hours and warmer water favour rapid algal growth, so summer maintenance tends to focus on managing nutrient load, keeping marginal and floating plant cover doing its job of shading the water, and watching pump and filter performance closely since this is when filtration works hardest. Swim ponds in particular need consistent attention through summer, as this is the season they are used most.

Fish behaviour matters too, in koi and ornamental ponds. Fish gasping at the surface, gathering near inflows, or simply appearing less active than usual can be an early sign of an oxygen or water quality issue, though any specific fish health concern is a matter for a vet rather than a pond designer.

Management approaches generally focus on adjusting these three factors rather than treating algae as an isolated problem to eliminate outright. That might mean increasing floating or marginal plant cover for more shade, reviewing fish stocking levels against pond volume, or checking whether a filter is mature enough to be processing the nutrient load the pond is currently carrying.
