Riders who care about gear notice the details the shell shape, the lining material and the finish quality all add up to something that matters. A well-made helmet carries more than a certification label it carries the design decisions that balance protection with wearability over a long ride. The world of motorcycle helmets has moved beyond basic shell-and-strap designs and a modern helmet can be crafted riding gear, a design statement and a certified safety product.
 Understanding made to order helmets
The process starts with measurements and a conversation about intended use because a daily commuter may need different choices than a Sunday rider. For some, the custom process is as enjoyable as receiving the helmet because choosing finishes and following the build creates a connection to the object. Made to order does not mean made outside the rules the helmet still has to pass the same certification tests as an off-the-shelf model.

Made to order does not mean made outside the rules the helmet still has to pass the same certification tests as an off-the-shelf model. The wait is longer than buying from stock and that is part of the point. A made to order helmet lets a rider move beyond the standard catalogue by working with the maker on shell, lining, colours and finishes.

A made to order helmet is built and checked individually then shipped only when it meets the maker's standard. Key points on helmet shell materials
The liner inside the shell is just as important as the shell itself because expanded polystyrene foam absorbs impact energy by compressing. Polycarbonate is the most affordable option common in entry-level helmets, tough and easy to mould but usually heavier. Once compressed, the liner does not recover which is why a helmet that has taken a hit needs replacing even if the shell looks intact. Carbon fibre is the lightest and stiffest of the three which makes it attractive for high-end helmets.

Fibreglass sits in the middle heavier than carbon fibre but lighter than polycarbonate, and suited to a crafted approach. Helmet shells are usually made from fibreglass, carbon fibre or polycarbonate and each material balances weight, strength and cost differently.

What matters in open face vs full face helmets
Whatever the format, the helmet must fit and certify because a badly fitting open face helmet is less useful than a well-fitting full face. A full face helmet covers the chin and jaw which are vulnerable in many impacts. Open face and full face helmets answer different riding needs and the best choice depends on more than appearance. Weather plays a part because a full face helmet keeps rain and cold wind off the face better than an open face design.

Many riders own one of each format using the open face for sunny Sunday runs and the full face for motorway work. A full face helmet covers the chin and jaw which are vulnerable in many impacts. Weather plays a part because a full face helmet keeps rain and cold wind off the face better than an open face design.

The decision is about matching the helmet to the riding you do most not about which format is better in absolute terms. An open face helmet leaves the face exposed and is often chosen for shorter trips, city riding or a classic look. Weather plays a part because a full face helmet keeps rain and cold wind off the face better than an open face design.
A closer look at helmet fit
The first step is to measure around the widest part of the head just above the eyebrows and ears. Vision and strap position matter too because the visor should give a clear field of view and the chin strap should sit comfortably. Wearing the helmet for a few minutes reveals problems that a quick try-on will miss.

Wearing the helmet for a few minutes reveals problems that a quick try-on will miss. Fit is the part of helmet choice that cannot be outsourced to a review because head shape varies as much as head circumference. Vision and strap position matter too because the visor should give a clear field of view and the chin strap should sit comfortably. A helmet that rotates easily on the head is too loose no matter what the size label says.

A long oval head and a round head can need different models even when the measured numbers match. Frequently asked questions Can I use a helmet after dropping it?
A significant drop can compress the inner liner even if the shell looks fine. If the helmet has taken a hard knock, replace it. Minor bumps from normal handling are less likely to cause damage.
What is the Distinguished Gentleman's Ride?
The Distinguished Gentleman's Ride is a global charity event where riders dress in classic style and ride vintage or classic-styled motorcycles to raise money for men's mental health and prostate cancer research.

What should I look for in a helmet review?
A good review covers fit for different head shapes, weight over distance, noise, ventilation, visor quality, and certification. Avoid reviews that blend looks and safety into a single vague score.
How do I know if a helmet fits correctly?
A correctly fitting helmet feels snug all the way round without painful pressure points. It should not move when you turn your head, and the cheek pads should touch without pinching. Try it on for several minutes.
 Are more expensive helmets safer?

Price usually reflects materials, finish and brand positioning rather than a large jump in impact protection. The certification label is the reliable indicator that a helmet met the required safety standard.

Choosing a helmet combines practical safety with personal style and the best choice fits properly, carries the right certification and suits the riding you actually do. Investing time in helmet choice pays off every ride and a proper fit with current certification is the non-negotiable starting point. A helmet should be matched to the rider, not just the bike because certification and fit matter more than branding alone.
