October half-term sits right at the edge of the season on the coast. Some parks are winding down for winter by then, so it's worth checking which facilities and local attractions are still running rather than assuming a summer-season list applies. The upside is a proper taste of autumn: the crowds of August are long gone, the coastal paths near parks such as ours on the Yorkshire coast are quieter, and a crisp walk followed by fish and chips has its own appeal that a hot August day doesn't offer.

There's a stretch of the year, roughly from October through to March, when the coast quietens right down and a caravan holiday starts to feel like a different holiday altogether. Fewer people on the beach, no queue for the amusements, and a pace that suits a couple or a family who'd rather walk the front than fight for a spot on it.

Not every caravan holiday needs to be a week. A two or three-night weekend break and a full week away suit different situations, and it's worth being honest about which one actually fits before booking either.

The honest caveats matter here more than in any other season. Swimming pools, outdoor play areas and some on-site catering at seaside parks typically close or run reduced hours over winter, and local seasonal attractions, ice cream kiosks, some smaller museums, often shut entirely until spring. Check what's actually open at your specific destination before travelling rather than assuming a scaled-down version of the summer offer; in some cases it's closed rather than reduced. Weather can also affect road conditions on rural approaches to the coast, so it's worth checking the forecast the day before rather than the week before.

Traffic is the other predictable factor. The Friday afternoon and Saturday morning before a bank holiday weekend are consistently the busiest times on the road network heading toward the coast, and the Monday afternoon return trip mirrors it in reverse. Travelling a little outside those windows, a Thursday evening arrival or a Tuesday morning departure where possible, avoids a meaningful chunk of that congestion for very little extra cost in time off.
