Key points on ece 22.06 certification A certified helmet carries a label inside the shell showing the standard number and a homologation code that identifies the tested model. Where the older standard focused on direct impact absorption the newer version adds rotational force testing and covers more of the helmet surface. ECE 22.06 is a useful filter when choosing a helmet because it removes products that have not been independently tested. ECE 22.06 is the current European helmet standard and it replaced ECE 22.05 with a broader set of tests.

Weather plays a part because a full face helmet keeps rain and cold wind off the face better than an open face design. Many riders own one of each format using the open face for sunny Sunday runs and the full face for motorway work.

Investing time in helmet choice pays off every ride and a proper fit with current certification is the non-negotiable starting point. Choosing a helmet combines practical safety with personal style and the best choice fits properly, carries the right certification and suits the riding you actually do. A helmet should be matched to the rider, not just the bike because certification and fit matter more than branding alone.

Understanding helmet reviews A review should mention certification and construction because a helmet can look good but still fall short on safety standards. Weight matters more on long rides than short ones since a helmet that feels fine for ten minutes can become tiring after two hours. Fit is the most personal element because a reviewer with a round head may love a helmet that feels tight on a long oval head. A useful helmet review goes beyond first impressions covering fit, weight, noise, ventilation, visor quality and long-term behaviour.

Helmet shells are usually made from fibreglass, carbon fibre or polycarbonate and each material balances weight, strength and cost differently. The liner inside the shell is just as important as the shell itself because expanded polystyrene foam absorbs impact energy by compressing. Once compressed, the liner does not recover which is why a helmet that has taken a hit needs replacing even if the shell looks intact. Carbon fibre is the lightest and stiffest of the three which makes it attractive for high-end helmets.

Why do riders choose handcrafted helmets? Handcrafted helmets appeal to riders who value individual finish, smaller batches, and the human judgement involved in shaping and inspecting each piece. They often come from smaller workshops with a distinct design identity.

Riders sometimes assume a more expensive helmet is automatically safer but price usually reflects materials, finish and positioning rather than a large jump in impact performance. A useful helmet review goes beyond first impressions covering fit, weight, noise, ventilation, visor quality and long-term behaviour. Noise and ventilation affect comfort too with a quiet helmet reducing fatigue on fast roads and good airflow keeping the rider cool. A review should mention certification and construction because a helmet can look good but still fall short on safety standards.

Can I clean my helmet with household products? Household cleaners and solvents can damage paint, trim and liner materials. Use a soft cloth with lukewarm water for the shell, and a product designed for leather if your helmet has leather trim.

Fibreglass sits in the middle heavier than carbon fibre but lighter than polycarbonate, and suited to a crafted approach.
