Pressure rating is where corners genuinely should not be cut. Every flexible hose has a working pressure it is designed and tested to, and mains-fed systems, unvented cylinders in particular, run at higher sustained pressure than an old gravity-fed tank system ever did. A hose rated for low-pressure use has no business being fitted on a mains-pressure job, regardless of whether the thread happens to match.

This is the practical case for softening in the parts of the UK where mains water runs hard: not as a lifestyle upgrade, but as protection for the heating elements, appliances and pipework that hard water otherwise wears down faster than it should. A softener does not fix existing scale damage on its own, but it stops new scale forming, which changes the maintenance picture on a property considerably over the following years.

For anyone new to the category, the parts worth understanding are the resin tank itself, the brine tank that holds the salt, and the control valve that manages the whole cycle, timing when regeneration happens and how much water and salt it uses. Cheaper units tend to run on a fixed timer regardless of actual usage; better-specified ones meter flow and regenerate only when the resin genuinely needs it, which uses less salt and less water over a year.

Serious DIY buyers and trade buyers speccing a softener for a client both need to think in terms of resin capacity matched to household size and water hardness, not just the headline price of the unit. An undersized softener will regenerate constantly and [[http://www.webclap.com/php/jump.php?url=http://www.youwantech.com/xe/board/839000|plumbers merchants]] burn through salt; an oversized one is money spent on capacity that is never used.

Plumb2U stocks safety-rated spares for unvented cylinders, including expansion vessels, relief valves and the fittings that go with them, alongside parts for standard vented systems, all at trade prices with next-day despatch. Getting the right, correctly rated part first time matters more on an unvented system than almost anywhere else in a plumbing job, and it is worth ordering from trade supplies that treat that distinction seriously.

A mixer shower works the opposite way: it blends hot and cold water drawn from the property's existing supply, whether that is a combination boiler, a vented cylinder, or an unvented cylinder, and its performance rides entirely on what that system can provide. On a property with an unvented cylinder or a combi boiler delivering strong, consistent mains pressure to both hot and cold, a mixer shower can perform very well, often better than an electric shower, because it is not limited by the kW-versus-flow trade-off that constrains instantaneous heating. On a property with a low-pressure vented cylinder fed from a loft tank, the same mixer shower may deliver disappointing pressure unless a pump is added to the system.
