The first two days after a reptile arrives home are less about anything the keeper actively does and more about giving the animal space to settle. A new environment, a new enclosure, and the stress of transport all take time to work through, and rushing that process is one of the more common mistakes made with a newly acquired animal.

Most reptile substrates are sold as general-purpose products, suitable in theory for a wide range of species with only minor adjustments. The ProRep Beardie Life range takes a different approach, building a substrate and accessory system around a single species, the bearded dragon, rather than adapting a generic mix to fit.

Start with the enclosure. Size and material depend entirely on the species being kept, so it's worth checking a care sheet before buying anything else. Heating usually means a heat mat or a heat bulb paired with a thermostat, since an unregulated heat source is one of the more common ways an enclosure ends up too hot or too cold. Lighting needs vary by species too. Many reptiles need UVB provision to process calcium properly, while others need very little. Substrate should match the species' natural habitat and digging behaviour rather than be picked for how it looks in the tank.

Running costs are the part most new keepers underestimate. Electricity for heating and lighting runs continuously, bulbs and elements need periodic replacement, and livefood or fresh produce is an ongoing weekly cost rather than a one-off. Taken together, these typically add up to a modest but real monthly outlay, on top of the initial setup, for as long as the animal is kept.

Hides matter more than new keepers often expect. Most reptiles need at least a warm-end hide and a cool-end hide so they can thermoregulate by choosing where to sit, and a nervous animal without anywhere to retreat to will show it in its behaviour.
