A closer look at motorcycle riding events Smaller local runs and bike nights matter too because recommendations pass by word of mouth in those settings. Wheels and Waves in Biarritz brings together surfing, art and motorcycling in a coastal setting that favours lifestyle over competition. A helmet on a mannequin tells one story but the same helmet on a rider at a coastal rally tells another.

A full face helmet covers the chin and jaw which are vulnerable in many impacts. An open face helmet leaves the face exposed and is often chosen for shorter trips, city riding or a classic look. The decision is about matching the helmet to the riding you do most not about which format is better in absolute terms.

Most manufacturers suggest replacing a helmet every five to seven years even if it has not been in a crash. Storage matters as much as cleaning because a helmet left in direct sunlight or on a hot dashboard degrades faster. Regular inspection catches problems early so check the shell for cracks, the liner for compression and the strap for wear.

Fit is the part of helmet choice that cannot be outsourced to a review because head shape varies as much as head circumference. Wearing the helmet for a few minutes reveals problems that a quick try-on will miss. When a helmet is the right size it feels snug all the way round without any painful pressure point.

Key points on cafe racer helmet style Open face helmets are popular in this scene because they fit the stripped-back style of the bikes. Cafe racer culture puts style and function on equal footing and the gear tends to follow the same logic as the bikes. The helmet is one visible thread in a larger picture that includes fundraising and awareness around men's health.

Can I use a helmet after dropping it? A significant drop can compress the inner liner even if the shell looks fine. If the helmet has taken a hard knock, replace it. The wait is longer than buying from stock and that is part of the point. The process starts with measurements and a conversation about intended use because a daily commuter may need different choices than a Sunday rider. A made to order helmet is built and checked individually then shipped only when it meets the maker's standard.

What matters in made to order helmets The wait is longer than buying from stock and that is part of the point. A made to order helmet is built and checked individually then shipped only when it meets the maker's standard. Made to order does not mean made outside the rules the helmet still has to pass the same certification tests as an off-the-shelf model.

Why do brands do helmet collaborations? Collaborations let a helmet maker borrow cultural context from another brand or event, while the partner reaches motorcyclists without building its own helmet range. The best ones involve real design decisions, not just logo swaps.

Weather plays a part because a full face helmet keeps rain and cold wind off the face better than an open face design. Open face and full face helmets answer different riding needs and the best choice depends on more than appearance. An open face helmet leaves the face exposed and is often chosen for shorter trips, city riding or a classic look.

Whatever the format, the helmet must fit and certify because a badly fitting open face helmet is less useful than a well-fitting full face. Many riders own one of each format using the open face for sunny Sunday runs and the full face for motorway work. Weather plays a part because a full face helmet keeps rain and cold wind off the face better than an open face design.

A certified helmet carries a label inside the shell showing the standard number and a homologation code that identifies the tested model. Where the older standard focused on direct impact absorption the newer version adds rotational force testing and covers more of the helmet surface. Riders sometimes assume a more expensive helmet is automatically safer but price usually reflects materials, finish and positioning rather than a large jump in impact performance. ECE 22.06 is the current European helmet standard and it replaced ECE 22.05 with a broader set of tests.

Understanding open face vs full face helmets A full face helmet covers the chin and jaw which are vulnerable in many impacts. The decision is about matching the helmet to the riding you do most not about which format is better in absolute terms.

The scene values individuality so riders spend time choosing leathers, gloves and helmets that feel personal. The best cafe racer helmets meet the same certification standards as sport or touring helmets but the difference is in the aesthetic. Cafe racer culture puts style and function on equal footing and the gear tends to follow the same logic as the bikes.
