Booking early is less about beating a queue and more about choice. A pitch with a sea view, a caravan that sleeps six comfortably, or a week that lines up with both parents' annual leave: these are the bookings that get taken months out, not the week before. Parks along the English coast, ours included, tend to open the following year's summer diary not long after the current season closes, so the families who book in autumn get first pick of the following July and August.

It's worth checking your specific school's exact dates against the calendar week, since half-terms can shift by a few days between regions and individual schools, particularly for February. A quick check of the school's own term dates before booking avoids the awkward situation of a holiday booked for the wrong week. Beyond that, the main planning task is simple: decide which half-term suits, book it early, and set expectations for the season, quieter and cooler in October, properly wintery in February, rather than a scaled-down summer.

The pattern is consistent enough to plan around. Demand for the specific bank holiday weekend itself, arriving Friday or Saturday and leaving Monday or Tuesday, is noticeably higher than for an ordinary weekend either side of it, since a Monday off turns a normal two-night stay into a three or four-night one without using annual leave. That means the actual bank holiday dates are usually the first to book out, while the weekend immediately before or after often has more availability at a similar price.

Booking is the first decision. Parks along the English coast, ours included, typically open the following summer's diary not long after the current season ends, and the best pitches and the specific weeks that overlap with the tail end of one school's term and the start of another's holiday tend to go first. Booking in autumn or winter for the following August gives a genuine choice of week and accommodation; booking in June for the same August usually means taking whatever's left.

Wildlife and colour are the specific draw many people underrate. Migrating birds pass along stretches of the East Yorkshire and Norfolk coast through September and October, and hedgerows and coastal scrub turn properly seasonal colours a few weeks before inland areas catch up, thanks to the milder coastal microclimate. A pair of binoculars is a better packing decision for an autumn coastal trip than most people think to bring.

That overlap is the main planning point. A half-term week that includes the late May bank holiday effectively gives an extra day without using extra time off, and parks tend to see a noticeable jump in bookings for that specific week compared with an ordinary week either side of it.
