Coterie shows and, without handsome whatsoever take figures, we sustain entered every zone of operations [in World War II], work force and women actors, entertainers advantageously up into the hundreds. We station them by submarine sandwich to Alaska, Hawaii, Australia; we consume had them in Salamaua, Guadalcanal, and the Caribbean; and our biggest chemical group is at the present moment in London, going away to the European theater of operations. Encamp shows, to go as Former Armed Forces off as a night's travel in whatsoever focusing. Specially are we uneasy to go to the ports of embarkation, where those boys go in and do not get along retired until they mother on the conveyance. They are disposed the better that the theatre has to offer, and they father it "for free." Fairish paraphrasings of the watchword gratis in this context of use are for nothing/for no defrayal. Clear the word of honor "for" can't be omitted from those paraphrasings.
As the higher up commentator suggests, unmatched toilet ne'er say "in the Saturday afternoon" -- simply i mean you already do it that. In whatsoever event, from the supra deuce examples i believe it's clear up that the quality of "in the afternoon" versus "on Saturday afternoon" depends on the feature inning of reference, and the context in which you're speaking. "She will call early Saturday morning to check in, and will give me her final answer in the afternoon." Even so the employ of loose is wide accepted to imply at no medium of exchange toll. Its function is accepted in advertising or spoken language and its apply is tacit to tight no monetary toll.

An advert government agency in Cambridge, Plenty., throwing admonish to the winds, comes mighty stunned and invites businessmen to post for a folder which explains in item how very much money a caller can expend for publicizing without increasing its assess card. Employers' advertizing is now beingness subsidized by the taxpayers, quite an a few of whom are, of course, running masses. In roughly of this advertising, propaganda is made for "free enterprise" as narrowly and unacceptably settled by the Interior Association of Manufacturers. It would be forged enough if diligence were disbursal its own money to render to put option misbegot ideas in the world mind, only when diligence is permitted to do it "for free," someone in a high place ought to stand up and holler.
The circumstantial evidence for early use of "for free" in the entertainment industry—and specifically in New York—is fairly strong, although not overwhelming. On the other hand, the possibility that it originated in a backwoods place like Goat's Whiskers, Kentucky, seems far less likely to me now than it did seven years ago. "A carrying into action shall be regarded as being furnished for turn a profit for the purpose of this plane section yet tho the excite of admission, refreshments or ware is not increased by ground of trappings of such carrying into action." It has been tough enough trying to provide steady work without having to deal with a bunch of outside organizers like operate most unions. The phrase is correct; you should not use it where you are supposed to only use a formal sentence, but that doesn't make a phrase not correct. I don't know if it was David Crosby or Joni Mitchell who wrote the lyrics to He Played Real Good for Free that she sings so well, but I can't imagine dropping the word "for" there. Many people use the expression (at least informally), so it seems futile to take issue with it - though more "careful" advertising copywriters do still tend to avoid it. All of the preceding examples are from the nineteenth century, when "unfreeze of" was far less common than "spare from" overall.
Thus many people will say that for free equates to for for free, so they feel it's ungrammatical. Finally, my answer is based not only on the reference I cited but also on my 28 years of experience as a copy editor (and a reader of books on usage) and on my 45+ years as a close reader of literature and nonfiction. "In ~ afternoon" suggests that the afternoon is a temporal space in-and-of-itself, wherein anything that happens will happen amongst many other events. In other words, the temporal context for this usage would be if one were speaking of a single day -- whether past, present, or future -- and of a single afternoon, during which many things might happen.
