Sildenafil (Viagra) is used to treat erectile dysfunction (impotence; inability to get or keep an erection) in men. Sildenafil is in a class of medications called phosphodiesterase (PDE) inhibitors. Sildenafil treats erectile dysfunction by increasing blood flow to the penis during sexual stimulation. Sildenafil treats PAH by relaxing the blood vessels in the lungs to allow blood to flow easily. The results from this pilot study are shown in Table 3; the mean resting systolic and diastolic blood pressures decreased by 7% and 10% compared to baseline in these patients. Mean resting values for right atrial pressure, pulmonary artery pressure, pulmonary artery occluded pressure and cardiac output decreased by 28%, 28%, 20% and 7% respectively.

An erection, which is the hardening of the penis, occurs when the sponge-like tissue in the penis fills with blood. When the brain becomes aroused, signals are sent to the penis, leading to the release of a chemical called cGMP. CGMP relaxes particular muscle cells in the tissue of the penis, and this allows an increase in blood flow to the area. Sildenafil is an erectile dysfunction treatment intended for use by men who need help getting an erection. It has no proven benefits for women and could potentially pose health risks.
