Hi, I'm james h.. I live in Oregon. Craig "The Water Guy" Phillips asked me to share my homeowner experience with local tap water from the city and the SoftPro® Elite HE Water Softener for City Water (Industry's Best Softener & Filter Combo) I purchased. This is how my adventures played out. I hope this helps you in your decision.

Did you know that installing a high-efficiency water softener can reduce your household's water and salt consumption by up to 40% compared to traditional systems?
Six months ago, I was dealing with the classic signs of hard water in my Oregon home - crusty white buildup on fixtures, soap that wouldn't lather properly, and constantly having to scrub mineral deposits off my coffee maker. After extensive research, I decided on the SoftPro Elite Basic High Flow High Efficiency Water Softener, and I'm here to share my complete experience - from installation headaches to the remarkable transformation in our daily water quality.
The Hard Water Problem That Finally Pushed Me Over the Edge[[https://www.youtube.com/embed/IwlfxHprPH8?si=DL4vvspnGTbn3W1n|external page]]
Living in Oregon, I always assumed our municipal water was pretty good quality. Sure, I noticed some white spots on glassware and the occasional mineral buildup around faucets, but I figured that was just normal homeowner stuff. It wasn't until our dishwasher started leaving everything looking worse after washing that I realized we had a serious hard water problem.

The breaking point came when I spent an entire Saturday morning scrubbing calcium deposits off our shower doors, only to see them return within a week. My wife started complaining about her hair feeling dry and brittle after showers, and our expensive coffee maker was producing increasingly bitter coffee despite regular cleaning. I tested our water with a home kit and discovered we had 18 grains per gallon of hardness - well into the "very hard" category.

The financial impact was becoming clear too. We were going through dish soap and laundry detergent faster than seemed normal, and our water heater was only five years old but already showing signs of mineral buildup. I calculated that between excessive soap usage, potential appliance damage, and the time spent constantly cleaning mineral deposits, we were looking at significant ongoing costs.

That's when I started researching water softening solutions seriously. I needed something that could handle our family of four's water usage while being efficient enough to not break the bank on salt and water consumption.
Why I Chose the SoftPro Elite Over Other Options

My research phase lasted about three weeks, and I'll be honest - the options were overwhelming. I looked at everything from basic salt-based systems to expensive salt-free conditioners and even considered whole-house reverse osmosis systems.

Initially, I was drawn to salt-free systems because they seemed lower maintenance. But after digging into the science, I learned they don't actually remove hardness minerals - they just change their structure to reduce scaling. For our level of hardness, I needed actual mineral removal.

Traditional timed water softeners were the most affordable option, but the idea of regenerating on a schedule regardless of actual water usage seemed wasteful. I wanted something smarter that would adapt to our actual consumption patterns.

The SoftPro Elite Basic caught my attention because of its demand-initiated regeneration controlled by the advanced SoftPro Valve. This means it only regenerates when needed based on actual water usage, not an arbitrary timer. The high-efficiency design promised to use up to 75% less salt and 64% less water during regeneration compared to traditional systems.

What really sold me was the system's ability to handle high flow rates - up to 12 gallons per minute - without pressure drop. With teenagers in the house taking long showers while the dishwasher runs, I needed something that could keep up with peak demand.

The pricing was competitive with other high-efficiency units, but the 10-year warranty on the SoftPro Valve and the company's reputation for customer service gave me confidence in the long-term investment.
Unboxing and First Impressions
The system arrived on a freight truck about a week after ordering. The driver helped get the palletized shipment into my garage, which I appreciated since the main tank weighs about 150 pounds when filled with resin.

Everything was packaged extremely well - the brine tank nested inside protective foam, and all the smaller components were individually wrapped. The build quality was immediately apparent. The fiberglass tank has a solid, professional feel, and the SoftPro Valve on top looks robust and well-engineered.

The included installation kit contained everything needed for a basic installation: bypass valve, fittings, drain line adapter, and even the salt. The installation manual was comprehensive - almost too comprehensive. It included both a quick-start guide and a detailed technical manual, which initially created some confusion about which instructions to follow.

One pleasant surprise was the inclusion of a water test kit and detailed water quality worksheet. This helped me properly configure the system for our specific water conditions rather than just guessing at the settings.
Installation Experience: YouTube Saved the Day
The manufacturer rates this as a DIY-friendly installation, and overall, [[https://www.trustpilot.com/review/softprowatersystems.com|https://www.trustpilot.com/review/softprowatersystems.com]] I'd agree - but there were definitely some challenges. I have moderate plumbing experience, having done basic repairs and fixture installations, but this was more complex than changing a toilet or fixing a leak.

The first hurdle was finding the right location. The system needs to be installed on the main water line after the meter but before the water heater. In my house, this meant working in a cramped utility room with limited maneuvering space. I had to relocate some storage shelves and install additional lighting to work safely.

The actual plumbing connections weren't too difficult once I figured out the layout. I decided to use SharkBite fittings instead of soldering since the installation area was tight and I wanted the option to easily remove the system if needed. This added about $30 to the project cost but saved hours of work.

Here's where the instruction confusion came in: the quick installation guide showed a simplified bypass setup, while the full manual detailed a more complex installation with additional shutoff valves. I initially followed the quick guide but ended up consulting YouTube videos from other SoftPro owners. The video tutorials were incredibly helpful and showed real-world installations similar to my setup.

The most challenging part was programming the SoftPro Valve. The control head has multiple settings for water hardness, iron levels, household size, and regeneration preferences. The manual provides formulas for calculating these settings, but it took some trial and error to get everything dialed in correctly.

Total installation time was about 6 hours spread over a Saturday, including the time spent relocating items and making two trips to the hardware store for additional fittings. A professional installation would have cost around $400-500 in my area, so the DIY route saved significant money.
Performance Results: The Numbers Don't Lie[[https://www.softprowatersystems.com/products/iron-master-iron-filter-for-well-water|(Image: [[https://images.loox.io/uploads/2025/11/16/q1Vf8Jy9o.jpg|https://images.loox.io/uploads/2025/11/16/q1Vf8Jy9o.jpg]]) ]]
After letting the system run for 24 hours to fully condition the resin, I started testing the results. The transformation was immediate and measurable.

Using test strips, our incoming water hardness of 18 grains per gallon dropped to zero - complete removal of calcium and magnesium. The SoftPro Elite uses high-capacity resin that's more efficient at ion exchange than standard resins, and the results prove it.

Flow rate [[https://www.deviantart.com/search?q=performance|performance]] exceeded expectations. I measured 11.5 GPM through the system with only a 2 PSI pressure drop from our municipal supply pressure of 65 PSI. Even during peak usage times - morning showers while the dishwasher runs - we've never experienced pressure issues.

Salt efficiency has been impressive. The system calculates regeneration based on actual water usage and hardness removal. In our first month, we used approximately 35 pounds of salt to treat about 3,200 gallons of water. Compared to our neighbor's traditional timed system that uses 50 pounds monthly, the efficiency difference is substantial.

Water usage during regeneration is where this system really shines. Each regeneration cycle uses about 28 gallons of water and takes roughly 45 minutes. Traditional systems can use 50-80 gallons per cycle, so the savings add up quickly.

The demand-initiated regeneration controlled by the SoftPro Valve has been remarkably accurate. It typically regenerates every 4-6 days depending on our usage patterns, and we've never experienced breakthrough hardness - that period when hardness starts returning before regeneration.
Real-World Daily Living Improvements
The practical benefits became noticeable within the first week and have only improved over time. Our coffee maker, which was producing increasingly bitter coffee due to mineral buildup, now makes coffee that tastes noticeably cleaner and more flavorful. I've only descaled it once in six months compared to monthly descaling before.

Laundry has been transformed. Clothes feel softer and colors appear more vibrant. We've reduced our detergent usage by about 30% while getting better cleaning results. White shirts that were developing a dingy gray tint are now staying bright white.

The shower experience is dramatically different. Both my wife and I noticed softer skin and more manageable hair within two weeks. Soap and shampoo lather much more effectively, so we're using less product while getting better results. Our teenage daughter, who has sensitive skin, has had fewer breakouts since the installation.

Cleaning throughout the house requires less effort and fewer harsh chemicals. Sinks, faucets, and shower doors stay cleaner longer. The dreaded weekly scrubbing of mineral deposits is now an occasional light wipe-down. Our housekeeper even commented on how much easier everything is to clean.

Dish washing results speak for themselves. Glassware comes out of the dishwasher actually clean and spot-free. We've been able to eliminate rinse aid completely, and even our stainless steel items have a consistent shine without water spots.

One unexpected benefit has been the impact on our plants. We have several houseplants that were struggling with the mineral content in our tap water. Since switching to softened water for plant care, they've shown remarkable improvement in growth and leaf color.
Operating Costs and Long-Term Value

Six months in, I can provide real data on operating costs rather than just estimates. Our monthly salt consumption averages 38 pounds, costing about $8 using standard solar salt. The system's efficiency means we could use more expensive potassium chloride if desired, though the cost difference makes sodium chloride the practical choice.

Electricity consumption is minimal since the SoftPro Valve only powers up during regeneration cycles and for periodic system monitoring. I estimate less than $5 annually in additional electricity costs.

Water costs for regeneration add approximately $6-8 monthly to our utility bill, far less than traditional systems that can add $15-20 monthly in water usage.

Total monthly operating costs run about $15-18, which is significantly lower than the $25-35 we budgeted based on traditional system estimates. Over a year, the efficiency savings will more than pay for the premium price of the high-efficiency design.

The return on investment extends beyond operating costs. We've eliminated bottled water purchases for drinking and cooking, saving roughly $40 monthly. Reduced soap and detergent usage saves another $15-20 monthly. Our water heater should last years longer without mineral buildup, and we're avoiding the costs of appliance repairs and replacements.

Conservative calculations show a complete payback of the system cost within 3.5 years when factoring in operating savings, reduced product consumption, and avoided appliance damage. After that, it's pure savings for the remainder of the system's expected 15-20 year lifespan.
Final Verdict: A Smart Investment in Home Infrastructure
After six months of real-world use, the SoftPro Elite Basic High Flow High Efficiency Water Softener has exceeded my expectations in nearly every category. The installation was more straightforward than anticipated once I found the right resources, and the performance has been flawless.

The advanced SoftPro Valve technology delivers on its efficiency promises, using substantially less salt and water than traditional systems while providing complete hardness removal. The high flow rate capability means we never experience pressure drops during peak usage periods.

Daily life improvements have been more significant than I anticipated. From better-tasting coffee to easier housecleaning, the benefits touch nearly every aspect of our home's water usage. The financial benefits are substantial when you factor in reduced product consumption and appliance protection.

This system is ideal for households dealing with moderate to severe hard water who want maximum efficiency and performance. The upfront investment is higher than basic systems, but the long-term savings and [[https://www.wikipedia.org/wiki/superior|superior]] performance justify the cost.

If you're considering a water softener and value efficiency, reliability, and long-term performance over initial cost savings, the SoftPro Elite Basic is an excellent choice. The engineering quality and advanced features make it a worthwhile investment in your home's infrastructure.

**Would I recommend it to friends and family?** Absolutely. In fact, I already have - my brother is planning to install the same system after seeing our results.

**Would I purchase it again?** Without hesitation. The combination of performance, efficiency, and reliability makes it one of the best home improvements I've made in years.
