Winter shifts the pond into dormancy. Fish in koi and ornamental ponds slow down considerably and stop feeding as water temperature drops, plant growth halts, and the main task becomes protecting against ice sealing the surface completely, which stops gas exchange and can put wildlife and fish under stress.

None of this replaces good initial design, which is where planting density, pump sizing and filtration capacity are set from the start, but it is the maintenance habits that keep a well-designed pond performing as intended year after year, distinct from the design decisions made before construction ever begins.

Long daylight hours and warmer water favour rapid algal growth, so summer maintenance tends to focus on managing nutrient load, keeping marginal and floating plant cover doing its job of shading the water, and watching pump and filter performance closely since this is when filtration works hardest.
