Wildlife and colour are the specific draw many people underrate. Migrating birds pass along stretches of the East Yorkshire and Norfolk coast through September and October, and hedgerows and coastal scrub turn properly seasonal colours a few weeks before inland areas catch up, thanks to the milder coastal microclimate. A pair of binoculars is a better packing decision for an autumn coastal trip than most people think to bring.

Summer is the busiest season on the UK coast by some distance, and the six weeks of the school holidays carry the bulk of that demand into a single stretch of the calendar. Planning around it well is less about avoiding the crowd, since a summer break inevitably means one, and more about timing and expectations so the busy weeks work in your favour rather than against it.

The two half-terms in the school year, one in mid-February and one in the last week of October, are among the busiest short breaks in the UK holiday-park calendar. Both fall at a point in the year when a week off feels overdue, and both are short enough, typically five to seven days, to suit a caravan break without needing to use up much annual leave.

The honest caveats matter here more than in any other season. Swimming pools, outdoor play areas and some on-site catering at seaside parks typically close or run reduced hours over winter, and local seasonal attractions, ice cream kiosks, some smaller museums, often shut entirely until spring. Check what's actually open at your specific destination before travelling rather than assuming a scaled-down version of the summer offer; in some cases it's closed rather than reduced. Weather can also affect road conditions on rural approaches to the coast, so it's worth checking the forecast the day before rather than the week before.

For any family with children still at school, the calendar rules the holiday plan long before anyone opens a brochure. Term dates fix the weeks you can actually travel, and those same weeks are the busiest on every UK holiday park's booking sheet. The six-week summer break, the week around half-term in October and February, and the fortnight either side of Easter all draw the same crowd at the same time, which means the popular pitches and the best-value weeks go first.
