Hi, I'm Ahmed H. I live in Colorado. Craig "The Water Guy" Phillips asked me to share my homeowner experience with local tap water from the city and the SoftPro® Elite HE Water Softener for City Water (Industry's Best Softener & Filter Combo) I purchased. This is how my adventure played out. I hope this helps you in your decision.

The Hard Water Problem That Changed Everything[[https://www.youtube.com/embed/fn8JmkC115U?si=TI455pYES8kj0sNp|external frame]]
Did you know that Colorado has some of the hardest water in the country?
I certainly learned this the hard way. My wife and I moved to our current home about two years ago, and within the first few months, we started noticing problems that we'd never experienced before.

Our glassware came out of the dishwasher looking cloudy and spotted, no matter what detergent we used. The shower doors developed a stubborn white film that seemed impossible to scrub off completely. My wife started complaining about her hair feeling dry and brittle after washing, and honestly, my skin felt tight and itchy after every shower.

But the real wake-up call came when our relatively new coffee maker started acting up. The brewing cycle became slower, and there was a noticeable mineral buildup around the water reservoir. That's when I realized we had a serious hard water issue that wasn't going to resolve itself.

The city water report showed our water hardness at around 18 grains per gallon – that's considered "very hard" by any standard. We were also dealing with chlorine taste and odor that made drinking straight tap water unpleasant. The combination of hardness minerals like calcium and magnesium, plus the chlorine treatment, was affecting every aspect of our daily water use.

I started researching water treatment solutions and quickly realized that this wasn't just about convenience or preference – hard water was costing us money through increased soap usage, potential appliance damage, and the constant need for specialized cleaning products.

Research Phase: Why I Chose SoftPro Over the Competition

I'll be honest, the water treatment industry is overwhelming when you're just starting to research. There are so many brands, technologies, and price points that it's easy to get lost in the technical jargon and marketing claims.

Initially, I looked at the big box store options, but the reviews were mixed and many complained about reliability issues. I also researched some of the heavily advertised national brands, but the $5,000 price tags made me wonder if I was paying more for marketing than actual quality.

What drew me to the SoftPro Elite HE was the combination of water softening and filtration in one system. Most traditional softeners only address hardness minerals, but this unit also tackles chlorine, chloramines, and other contaminants that affect taste and odor. That meant I wouldn't need separate systems or multiple maintenance schedules.

The technical specifications impressed me too. The SoftPro Valve technology promised efficient regeneration cycles that would minimize salt and water waste. Given that we're conscious about our environmental impact and utility costs, this efficiency factor was important to our decision.

I also appreciated that SoftPro is a US-based manufacturer with a solid reputation for customer service and [[https://mondediplo.com/spip.php?page=recherche&recherche=technical|technical]] support. When you're investing in a system that you'll depend on daily, knowing that parts and service are readily available gives peace of mind.

The warranty coverage was comprehensive, and the company's transparency about their manufacturing process and component sourcing convinced me that this was a quality investment rather than a quick fix.

Installation Experience: Easier Than Expected
My wife and I decided to tackle the installation ourselves to save on the professional installation costs. I have moderate DIY skills – I can handle basic plumbing and electrical work, but I'm not a professional by any means.

The system arrived well-packaged with clear installation instructions and all necessary fittings included. The build quality was immediately apparent – the tank construction felt solid, and the SoftPro Valve had a substantial, well-engineered feel compared to some of the plastic components I'd seen on other brands.

Installation took us about 4 hours total, spread across a weekend. The most time-consuming part was creating the bypass loop and ensuring proper positioning for the drain line. We needed to pick up about $150 in additional parts from the hardware store – mainly copper fittings, a drain saddle valve, and some additional tubing.

The electrical connection was straightforward – just a standard 110V outlet for the control valve. The programming interface was intuitive, and the manual provided clear guidance for setting up the regeneration schedule based on our water hardness and household size.

One thing I appreciated was that the system comes pre-loaded with the appropriate resin media, [[https://www.trustpilot.com/review/softprowatersystems.com|https://www.trustpilot.com/review/softprowatersystems.com]] so there's no guesswork about capacity or type. The initial startup and first regeneration cycle went smoothly, and we had soft water flowing within 24 hours of completing the installation.

**Was the installation perfect?**
Not entirely – I had to re-do one solder joint that didn't seal properly the first time, and it took me a while to get the bypass valve positioned correctly. But overall, it was manageable for someone with basic DIY skills and saved us several hundred dollars in installation costs.

First Impressions and Immediate Results
The difference was noticeable within the first few days. The most obvious change was in the shower – the water felt "slippery" in that characteristic way that soft water produces. My wife noticed that she needed less shampoo to get a good lather, and her hair felt smoother and more manageable.

The chlorine taste and odor disappeared completely. We could finally drink tap water without that swimming pool aftertaste, which meant we stopped buying bottled water for daily consumption. This alone probably saves us $30-40 per month.

Our dishwasher performance improved dramatically. Glassware came out crystal clear without spots, and we could reduce the amount of rinse aid we were using. The difference in our stainless steel appliances was remarkable – they stayed cleaner longer and polished up to a streak-free shine with minimal effort.

I was curious about the technical performance, so I invested in a water testing kit. Pre-treatment, our water measured 18 grains per gallon hardness. Post-SoftPro treatment, it consistently tested at 0-1 grains per gallon. The system was performing exactly as advertised.

The regeneration cycles occurred automatically during low-usage periods (typically around 2 AM), and we never experienced any interruption in soft water availability. The system seemed to learn our usage patterns and adjust accordingly.

Long-Term Performance: Six Months of Real-World Use[[https://www.softprowatersystems.com/products/iron-master-iron-filter-for-well-water|(Image: [[https://images.loox.io/uploads/2026/1/6/LLciqaPGW.jpg|https://images.loox.io/uploads/2026/1/6/LLciqaPGW.jpg]]) ]]
Now that I've lived with the SoftPro Elite HE for six months, I can speak to its long-term performance and reliability. The consistency has been impressive – the water quality hasn't degraded, and the system continues to regenerate efficiently.

Our salt usage averages about 40 pounds per month for a family of four with typical water usage. Based on our water hardness and consumption patterns, this aligns well with the efficiency claims. The high-efficiency design definitely uses less salt than older conventional systems.

Maintenance has been minimal. I check the salt level monthly and clean the brine tank every few months to prevent any buildup. The SoftPro Valve interface provides clear diagnostics, so I can monitor system performance and catch any issues early.

**Have there been any problems?**
Minor ones. About four months in, I noticed the regeneration cycles were happening more frequently than expected. A quick call to SoftPro's technical support revealed that I had the hardness setting slightly too high, which was triggering unnecessary regenerations. Adjusting the programming solved the issue immediately.

The filtration component continues to perform well. Our water tastes clean and fresh, with no chlorine or metallic aftertaste. According to the documentation, the filter media should last 3-5 years depending on usage and water quality, so I won't need to think about replacement for a while.

Energy consumption has been negligible – maybe $3-5 per month in additional electricity costs for the control valve operation. Water usage for regeneration is reasonable, adding about 50 gallons per cycle to our monthly consumption.

Cost Analysis: Is It Worth the Investment?
Let me break down the real costs of ownership, because this is where you'll either justify or regret your investment. The SoftPro Elite HE system cost us approximately $1,800 plus the $150 in installation materials since we did the work ourselves.

Monthly operating costs include salt (about $8-10), slightly higher water usage for regeneration ($3-5), and minimal electricity ($2-3). So we're looking at roughly $15 per month in ongoing expenses.

But here's where it gets interesting – our savings have been more substantial than I expected. We've eliminated bottled water purchases ($35/month), reduced soap and detergent usage by about 30% ($15/month), and no longer need specialized hard water cleaning products ($10/month). That's $60 monthly in direct savings.

The indirect savings are harder to quantify but equally real. Our water heater operates more efficiently without mineral scale buildup, our appliances should last longer, and we're not replacing glassware damaged by hard water etching.

**What about compared to that $5,000 competition I mentioned earlier?**
Honestly, I can't see spending more than double for marginally better features. The SoftPro system addresses all our water quality issues effectively and appears built to last. The additional $3,200 would take many years to justify through performance differences.

Looking at payback period, between direct savings and avoided costs, the system should pay for itself within 3-4 years. Given that water softeners typically last 10-15 years with proper maintenance, that's a solid return on investment.

What I Wish I'd Known Before Buying

After six months of ownership, there are a few things I would have benefited from knowing upfront. First, the "slippery" feeling of soft water takes some getting used to. For the first few weeks, it felt like I couldn't get all the soap off my skin, but that's just how soft water feels when you're accustomed to hard water.

The system is larger than I initially visualized. Make sure you measure your installation space carefully – you need clearance for salt loading, service access, and proper drainage. We had to rearrange some items in our utility room to accommodate everything properly.

Salt quality matters more than I realized. Cheap salt with high impurities can cause issues over time. I've settled on using solar salt crystals, which dissolve cleanly and minimize brine tank maintenance. It costs a bit more upfront but reduces long-term hassles.

**Did I underestimate any ongoing maintenance?**
Not really, but I did learn that keeping detailed records helps with troubleshooting. I now log salt additions, regeneration frequency, and any performance observations. This information proved valuable when I called technical support about the regeneration timing issue.

The programming flexibility is both a benefit and a potential complication. The SoftPro Valve can be customized extensively, but it's easy to overthink the settings. The factory defaults work well for most situations, and small adjustments are usually all that's needed.

One pleasant surprise was how much our guests notice the water quality. Several friends have commented on how much better our water tastes and how their skin feels after showering here. It's become a talking point that's led to a few referrals for SoftPro systems.

Final Verdict: Would I Buy It Again?
Absolutely. The SoftPro Elite HE has solved our hard water problems comprehensively and proven itself reliable over six months of daily use. The combination of softening and filtration eliminates the need for multiple systems, and the efficiency features keep operating costs reasonable.

**What makes this system stand out?**
The build quality is excellent, the SoftPro Valve technology works as advertised, and the customer support has been responsive and helpful. It's performed exactly as promised without any major issues or surprises.

The value proposition is strong, especially when compared to premium brands that cost significantly more. You get professional-grade performance at a price point that makes sense for most homeowners dealing with hard water issues.

For families dealing with similar water quality challenges – hardness above 10 grains per gallon combined with chlorine taste and odor – this system addresses both problems effectively in one unit. The convenience factor alone justifies the investment.

My wife and I are completely satisfied with the decision. The daily quality of life improvements, from better-tasting water to easier cleaning and improved personal care results, make this one of the better home investments we've made. Sure, it wasn't cheap upfront, but the ongoing benefits and cost savings make it worthwhile.

If you're on the fence about water treatment, I'd encourage you to test your water hardness and research your options thoroughly. For us, the SoftPro Elite HE was the right choice, and I'm confident recommending it to others facing similar water quality challenges.
