Hi, I'm Domenick A.. I live in Pennsylvania. Craig "The Water Guy" Phillips asked me to share my homeowner experience with local tap water from the city using the SoftPro® Elite HE Water Softener for City Water (Industry's Best Softener & Filter Combo) I purchased. This is how my adventure unfolded. I hope this helps guide your decision.

Did you know that even "treated" city water can wreak havoc on your home and health?
I certainly didn't until six months ago when I was staring at yet another mineral-crusted showerhead and wondering why my skin felt like sandpaper after every shower. My wife had been complaining about her hair feeling brittle, and our dishwasher was leaving white spots on everything despite using expensive rinse aids. That's when I stumbled down the rabbit hole of water quality research and discovered that our municipal water, while technically "safe," was loaded with dissolved minerals, chlorine, and other contaminants that were slowly but surely affecting our daily lives.

The Problem That Pushed Me Over the Edge[[https://www.youtube.com/embed/IwlfxHprPH8?si=DL4vvspnGTbn3W1n|external frame]]
Living in Pennsylvania, I thought city water meant problem-free water. Boy, was I wrong. Our municipal supply tested at 18 grains per gallon of hardness – that's considered "very hard" by industry standards. But the hardness was just the beginning.

The real wake-up call came when our seven-year-old water heater started making strange noises. A plumber friend took one look inside the tank during a routine inspection and shook his head. "Domenick, you've got serious mineral buildup in here. This thing's not going to last much longer if you don't do something about your water quality."

That conversation cost me sleep for weeks. I started noticing everything: the soap scum that required heavy-duty cleaners to remove, the way our clothes felt stiff and looked dingy despite expensive detergents, and most concerning, the chlorine smell that hit me every morning when I turned on the shower.

I tested our water with a TDS meter I picked up online – 340 parts per million of total dissolved solids. For reference, most water quality experts recommend keeping TDS below 150 ppm for optimal taste and appliance protection. Our city water was more than double that recommendation.

The health implications started weighing on me too. Chlorine might kill bacteria in the water treatment plant, but I learned it can form harmful byproducts called trihalomethanes during the treatment process. These compounds have been linked to various health concerns, especially with long-term exposure through drinking and showering.

But here's what really got my attention: the financial impact I hadn't calculated. Between the shortened lifespan of our appliances, the extra cleaning products we were buying, the increased soap and detergent usage (hard water makes everything less effective), and the bottled water we'd started purchasing because the tap water tasted so heavily chlorinated, we were easily spending an extra $200 monthly on water-related expenses.

Research Phase: Why I Chose SoftPro Over the Competition

Once I committed to solving our water problems, I dove deep into research. I spent three weeks reading everything I could find about water treatment systems, from basic carbon filters to reverse osmosis systems to whole-house solutions.

Initially, I was leaning toward a traditional water softener plus a separate carbon filter system. But as I dug deeper, I realized that approach would require two separate units, double the maintenance, and significantly more space in our utility room.

That's when I discovered combination systems like the SoftPro Elite HE. The concept made sense: one system that could handle both water softening and filtration, but I was skeptical about whether a combo unit could actually do both jobs effectively.

I reached out to three local water treatment dealers for quotes and consultations. The first two tried to sell me separate systems totaling over $4,800 plus installation. The third dealer introduced me to [[https://www.trustpilot.com/review/softprowatersystems.com|SoftPro Water Systems]] and their Elite HE model.

What impressed me about the SoftPro approach was their focus on efficiency. The Elite HE uses a high-capacity resin that regenerates based on actual usage rather than a preset timer. This means it only uses salt and water when necessary, not on some arbitrary schedule that wastes resources.

The technical specs sealed the deal for me: the SoftPro Valve system is rated for 500,000 gallons before needing attention, the resin bed has a 32,000-grain capacity (perfect for our family of four), and the carbon filtration stage specifically targets chlorine and chloramine without reducing water pressure.

But honestly? The warranty convinced me more than anything. SoftPro backs this system with a 10-year warranty on the control valve and tank, plus lifetime warranty on the resin. That level of confidence in their product told me they weren't cutting corners.

Unboxing and First Impressions
The Elite HE arrived on a pallet via freight delivery – this thing is substantial. The main tank stands about 54 [[https://pixabay.com/images/search/inches%20tall/|inches tall]] and weighs close to 200 pounds when loaded with resin. The build quality was immediately apparent: heavy-gauge fiberglass tank, professional-looking SoftPro Valve head, and components that felt like they belonged in a commercial installation.

What surprised me was the completeness of the package. Everything needed for installation was included: bypass valve, drain line, salt bridging solution, and even the initial salt charge. The installation manual was refreshingly clear, with actual photos instead of confusing line drawings.

One minor disappointment: as the original reviewer mentioned, the control face plate was applied slightly crooked with a few air bubbles. It's purely cosmetic and doesn't affect function, but at this price point, I expected perfect fit and finish. Still, the underlying components felt rock-solid.

The carbon pre-filter cartridge looked more substantial than I expected – a full 20-inch length with what appeared to be activated carbon plus KDF media for enhanced chlorine removal. This wasn't some cheap afterthought filter, but a legitimate filtration component.

Installation Experience: Easier Than Expected
I'm reasonably handy but hadn't tackled plumbing beyond basic faucet repairs. The SoftPro installation guide made it clear this was within DIY capability, though they strongly recommend professional installation for warranty compliance.

I chose the middle ground: hired a plumber for the main water line connections but handled the electrical and programming myself. Total installation time was about four hours, including the time my plumber spent explaining the bypass valve operation.

The location requirements were straightforward: within 50 feet of the main water line, near a 120V electrical outlet, and with access to a drain for the regeneration cycle. Our utility room met all criteria perfectly.

One installation tip that proved crucial: the system needs a minimum of 20 PSI water pressure to operate properly. Our house typically runs 45-50 PSI, so no issues there, but it's worth checking if you live in a low-pressure area.

The programming interface was surprisingly intuitive. Instead of cryptic codes and button sequences, the SoftPro Valve uses plain English prompts. I input our water hardness level (18 grains), household size (4 people), and iron content (0.3 ppm), and the system calculated optimal regeneration frequency automatically.

First regeneration cycle happened that evening – about 90 minutes of occasional water movement sounds, nothing disruptive. The system used approximately 32 gallons of water and 6 pounds of salt, establishing the baseline for ongoing operational costs.

Performance Testing and Measurable Results[[https://calc.softprowatersystems.com/?utm_source=website&utm_medium=page-post&utm_campaign=meme&utm_id=in-content|(Image: [[https://images.loox.io/uploads/2026/1/6/LLciqaPGW.jpg|https://images.loox.io/uploads/2026/1/6/LLciqaPGW.jpg]]) ]]
I'm a data-driven person, so I established baseline measurements before the SoftPro Elite HE went online and tracked changes systematically over the first three months.

Water hardness dropped from 18 grains per gallon to less than 1 grain per gallon within 24 hours of installation. I tested this with both digital hardness meter and old-fashioned soap test strips – both confirmed the dramatic reduction.

Chlorine elimination was equally impressive. Our city water typically contains 2-3 ppm of chlorine (I could smell it strongly every morning). Post-filtration testing showed less than 0.1 ppm chlorine content, essentially undetectable by taste or smell.

TDS levels dropped from 340 ppm to 285 ppm. This wasn't as dramatic as the hardness reduction, which makes sense because the system targets specific minerals rather than all dissolved solids. The remaining TDS consists primarily of beneficial minerals the system intentionally leaves behind.

But the real proof came in daily use. Within one week, I noticed soap lathering better in the shower. Two weeks in, my wife commented that her hair felt softer and more manageable. By month one, we'd stopped using fabric softener entirely – our clothes were coming out of the wash feeling naturally soft.

The most dramatic change? Our dishwasher. Those stubborn white spots on glassware completely disappeared. Our dishes started coming out looking like they did when we first bought the machine three years ago.

I tracked appliance efficiency changes too. Our water heater, which had been cycling on every 45-60 minutes to maintain temperature (likely due to mineral buildup reducing efficiency), started cycling every 75-90 minutes. That translates to roughly 30% less energy consumption for water heating.

Daily Life Impact: The Changes You Actually Notice
Six months in, the SoftPro Elite HE has become invisible in the best possible way – I notice its absence more than its presence, if that makes sense.

Morning showers transformed completely. The water feels silky rather than harsh, and I use about half the amount of body wash to achieve the same lather. My skin, which used to feel tight and dry within minutes of toweling off, stays comfortable throughout the day. I've actually stopped using daily moisturizer on most days.

My wife's hair routine changed significantly. She was previously washing every other day because hard water made her hair look flat and lifeless by day two. Now she can go three days between washes, and her hair maintains volume and shine throughout.

Kitchen cleanup became noticeably easier. Soap cuts through grease more effectively, pots and pans rinse cleaner, and we've eliminated the vinegar treatments we used to need for coffee maker and dishwasher maintenance.

Laundry improvements were gradual but substantial. Whites started looking whiter, colors appeared more vibrant, and fabric texture improved over several wash cycles. We cut our detergent usage by about 40% and completely eliminated liquid fabric softener and dryer sheets.

The taste improvement was immediate and noticeable. Gone was the chlorine aftertaste that made me reach for bottled water. Our morning coffee tastes cleaner, and even our kids started drinking more water directly from the tap.

Unexpected benefit: houseguest comments. Three different visitors mentioned how "great" our water tasted and how their skin felt better after showering. When guests notice your water quality unprompted, you know you've made the right choice.

Operating Costs and Long-Term Economics

Let's talk numbers because this investment needs to pay for itself over time.

Monthly salt consumption averages 40-50 pounds for our family of four. I buy salt in bulk at $6 per 50-pound bag, so monthly salt costs run about $6-8. Annual salt expense: roughly $90.

The carbon filter needs replacement every 6-12 months depending on chlorine levels. Replacement filters cost $45 each. With our moderate chlorine levels, I'm changing filters every 8 months, adding about $70 annually.

Electricity consumption for the SoftPro Valve and regeneration cycles adds approximately $3-4 monthly to our electric bill. Annual electrical cost: about $40.

Total annual operating costs: approximately $200. That breaks down to less than $17 monthly to treat all the water entering our home.

But here's where the economics get interesting – the savings side of the equation.

We've eliminated bottled water purchases (saving $35-40 monthly), cut cleaning product usage by roughly 30% (saving $20 monthly), reduced detergent and fabric softener costs by 40% (saving $25 monthly), and our water heater is operating more efficiently (saving an estimated $30 monthly on heating costs).

Conservative monthly savings: $110. Annual savings: $1,320.

Against annual operating costs of $200, we're netting $1,120 in annual savings. The system essentially pays for itself in operational savings within three years, not counting the extended appliance life and improved quality of life factors.

Maintenance Reality and Long-Term Ownership
Six months provides limited long-term perspective, but I can share the maintenance experience so far and expectations based on the system design.

Monthly tasks are minimal: check salt level (takes 30 seconds), verify system is regenerating as expected (I just listen for the occasional sounds), and note any changes in water quality or pressure.

The salt tank holds about 200 pounds when full. With our consumption rate, I'm refilling every 4-5 months. The wide opening makes salt loading straightforward – no wrestling with bags or funnels needed.

Carbon filter replacement happened at month six. The process took maybe 10 minutes: shut off water, release pressure, unscrew housing, replace cartridge, reassemble, restore water flow. The old filter was visibly darker, confirming it had been actively removing contaminants.

I've had zero mechanical issues. The SoftPro Valve has operated flawlessly through approximately 40 regeneration cycles. No leaks, no pressure drops, no programming glitches. The system just works consistently.

Looking ahead, SoftPro recommends professional service every 5 years to inspect seals, test valve operation, and verify programming accuracy. Given the 10-year warranty coverage, this seems like reasonable preventive maintenance.

The resin bed should last 10-15 years with normal use and proper maintenance. Replacement cost would be around $200-300 for media plus labor, still far less than buying a new system.

One ongoing observation: the system's efficiency has remained consistent. Regeneration frequency hasn't increased, salt usage hasn't crept up, and performance metrics haven't degraded. This suggests the components are holding up well under daily use.

Based on build quality and performance consistency, I'm confident this system will deliver reliable service for many years. The robust construction and comprehensive warranty support that confidence.

Would I make the same choice again?
Absolutely. The combination of performance, efficiency, and long-term value makes the SoftPro Elite HE a standout choice for treating city water. While the upfront cost requires consideration, the operational savings and quality of life improvements justify the investment within the first year of ownership.

For Pennsylvania homeowners dealing with similar water challenges, or anyone facing hard water combined with chlorine treatment issues, this system addresses both problems effectively in a single, well-engineered package. The SoftPro brand has earned my trust through consistent performance and thoughtful system design.
