Hi, I'm Walker V. I live in Missouri.

Craig "The Water Guy" Phillips asked me to share my homeowner experience with local tap water from the city and the SoftPro® Elite HE Water Softener for City Water (Industry's Best Softener & Filter Combo) I purchased.

This is how my adventures played out. I hope this helps you in your decision.
The Problem That Drove Me to Find a Solution[[https://www.youtube.com/embed/fn8JmkC115U?si=TI455pYES8kj0sNp|external site]]
Did you know that Missouri's municipal water can contain up to 15 grains per gallon of hardness minerals?

I sure didn't until I started investigating why my supposedly "clean" city water was wreaking havoc on my household. What I thought was normal city water turned out to be loaded with calcium and magnesium that was slowly but [[https://www.news24.com/news24/search?query=systematically%20destroying|systematically destroying]] my appliances and making daily life frustrating in ways I hadn't even connected to water quality.

The wake-up call came when my dishwasher started leaving white film on everything, despite using expensive rinse aids and premium detergents. My coffee maker began taking twice as long to brew, and I could hear it struggling with mineral buildup. The real kicker was when my plumber pointed out the calcium deposits choking my water heater during a routine maintenance call – at only three years old, it was already showing significant efficiency loss.

But the household impacts went beyond just appliances. My skin felt constantly dry and itchy after showers, no matter what lotions I used. My hair looked dull and felt brittle. Even our laundry came out feeling stiff and looking dingy, despite trying every fabric softener on the market. I was spending extra money on bottled water for drinking because the tap water had an odd metallic taste that became more noticeable over time.

The financial impact was adding up fast. Higher utility bills from an inefficient water heater, premature appliance replacements, excessive soap and detergent usage, and constant purchases of bottled water were creating a significant monthly drain. When I calculated the annual cost of these "hidden" expenses, I realized I was spending nearly $1,200 per year dealing with hard water problems – money that could be better invested in actually solving the root cause.
My Research Journey and Decision Process

Once I understood that hard water was the culprit behind my household headaches, I dove deep into researching solutions. I spent weeks reading about different technologies, comparing salt-based versus salt-free systems, and trying to understand the difference between basic softeners and combination units that also provide filtration.

The first decision point was whether to go with a traditional ion exchange water softener or one of the newer salt-free systems. After talking with local water treatment professionals and researching the science, I learned that salt-free systems don't actually remove hardness minerals – they claim to condition them to reduce scaling. For Missouri's high hardness levels (our city water tests at around 12 grains per gallon), multiple experts told me that only a true ion exchange system would deliver the results I needed.

That led me to focus on salt-based softeners, but I quickly discovered that not all systems are created equal. Basic softeners only address hardness, but they don't remove chlorine taste and odor or other contaminants that affect water quality. Since I was already dealing with taste issues and wanted comprehensive water improvement, combination softener-filter systems made more sense than installing separate units.

The SoftPro Elite HE caught my attention because it's specifically designed for city water applications. Unlike well water systems that focus on iron and sulfur, this unit tackles the specific challenges of municipal water: hardness minerals, chlorine, and taste/odor issues. The high-efficiency design appealed to me both environmentally and economically – it uses significantly less salt and water during regeneration compared to older technology.

What sealed the decision was learning about SoftPro's advanced SoftPro Valve technology. Traditional mechanical valves have multiple moving parts that can wear out, but the SoftPro Valve uses electronic controls for more precise operation and longer reliability. Given that this was a long-term investment, the superior valve technology and 10-year warranty provided confidence that this wouldn't become another premature replacement expense.
Unboxing and First Impressions
When the SoftPro Elite HE arrived, I was immediately impressed by the packaging quality. Everything was secure and well-protected, with no shipping damage despite the considerable weight. The main tank is significantly heavier than I expected – a good sign of substantial construction that suggests it's built to last.

The fiberglass tank has a clean, professional appearance that doesn't look out of place in my utility room. The SoftPro Valve head is noticeably more sophisticated than the basic mechanical valves I'd seen on other units, with a clear digital display and intuitive button layout. The build quality felt solid and substantial, not like the cheap plastic components I'd seen on some budget systems.

All the necessary components were included: bypass valve, drain fitting, salt sensor probe, and comprehensive installation hardware. The documentation package was thorough, with detailed installation instructions and clear diagrams that made the setup process much less intimidating than I'd anticipated.

One pleasant surprise was the compact footprint. Despite its high capacity, the unit takes up less space than I'd allocated in my utility room, leaving room for salt storage and easy access for maintenance. The modern design and quality construction gave me confidence that this was a professional-grade system, not a residential afterthought.
Installation Experience and Setup
I chose to hire a local plumber for the installation rather than attempting it myself, mainly because I wanted to ensure proper integration with my existing plumbing and maintain any warranty coverage. The installation took about 4 hours, including connecting the bypass valve, running a drain line, and installing the electrical connection.

My plumber was impressed with the system design, particularly noting how the SoftPro Valve simplified the installation process compared to older mechanical systems. The electronic controls eliminated the need for complex mechanical adjustments, and the bypass valve was well-engineered for easy service access.

The most time-consuming part was running a new drain line to my utility sink, which required some creative routing around existing utilities. The electrical connection was straightforward – just a standard outlet, no hardwiring required. Once everything was connected, the initial setup process was surprisingly user-friendly.

Programming the SoftPro Valve took about 15 minutes, entering information about our household size, local water hardness level (which I'd tested at 12 grains per gallon), and preferred regeneration schedule. The system automatically calculated optimal salt dosing and regeneration frequency based on these parameters, taking the guesswork out of operation.

The first regeneration cycle ran that evening, and I was surprised by how quiet the process was. I'd heard horror stories about noisy softeners keeping people awake, but the SoftPro Elite HE regenerated with minimal noise – just the sound of water flowing, no loud motor sounds or mechanical grinding.
Real-World Performance and Daily Impact[[https://www.softprowatersystems.com/products/iron-master-iron-filter-for-well-water|(Image: [[https://images.loox.io/uploads/2026/1/6/LLciqaPGW.jpg|https://images.loox.io/uploads/2026/1/6/LLciqaPGW.jpg]]) ]]
The transformation in water quality was noticeable within 24 hours of installation. The first shower felt different – my skin wasn't tight and dry afterward, and my hair felt softer and more manageable. But the most dramatic change was in the kitchen: dishes came out of the dishwasher spotless, without a single water spot or film.

Coffee was the real taste test, and the improvement was remarkable. The metallic taste was completely gone, replaced by clean, neutral water that let me actually taste my coffee beans instead of fighting through mineral flavors. I immediately stopped buying bottled water for drinking, saving about $40 per month right off the bat.

Laundry improvements took a few weeks to fully appreciate, but the difference is substantial. Clothes feel softer and look brighter, and I've been able to reduce detergent usage by about half while getting better results. White shirts that were starting to look gray are now noticeably whiter, and colors appear more vibrant.

What surprised me most was the cleaning time reduction.

Bathroom fixtures that used to require weekly scrubbing to remove mineral buildup now stay clean with just a quick wipe-down. Shower doors that were constantly cloudy with soap scum and mineral deposits now stay clear for weeks. This isn't just about aesthetics – it's saving me hours of cleaning time every month.

The system consistently delivers 0-1 grains per gallon hardness, down from our incoming 12 grains per gallon. I've tested this multiple times with digital TDS meters and hardness test strips, and the results are consistently excellent. Flow rate remains strong throughout the house, even during peak usage times when multiple fixtures are running simultaneously.
Operational Costs and Efficiency Analysis
After 10 months of operation, I can provide realistic cost data based on actual usage rather than manufacturer estimates. Salt consumption averages about one 40-pound bag every 6-8 weeks, depending on seasonal usage variations. At current local prices, that's approximately $6-8 per month in salt costs.

The high-efficiency design really does use less salt than traditional systems. My neighbor has an older softener of similar capacity, and he goes through salt about 40% faster than my SoftPro Elite HE. Over time, this efficiency difference adds up to meaningful savings, both financially and environmentally.

Electricity usage is minimal – the SoftPro Valve draws power only during regeneration cycles and for the digital display. I estimate it adds less than $3 per month to my electric bill, similar to running a small LED light bulb. Water usage during regeneration is also reasonable, using about 25-30 gallons per cycle every 8-10 days.

The real economic benefit comes from cost reductions elsewhere. My soap and detergent usage has dropped dramatically – I'm using about half as much laundry detergent, dishwasher detergent, and household cleaners while getting better results. Eliminating bottled water purchases saves $40 monthly. These operational savings essentially pay for the system's operating costs while delivering superior results.

Long-term appliance protection should provide additional value. My water heater is running more efficiently, my dishwasher isn't fighting mineral buildup, and my coffee maker no longer needs descaling treatments. While it's too early to quantify appliance life extension, the protective benefits are clearly working based on the elimination of scale buildup I was seeing before.
Maintenance and Long-Term Ownership

Daily maintenance is essentially zero – just occasional monitoring of salt levels and regeneration performance through the digital display. The SoftPro Valve provides clear information about system status, days until next regeneration, and salt level, making it easy to stay on top of maintenance needs without guesswork.

Monthly maintenance involves checking salt levels and adding a 40-pound bag when needed. The salt tank design makes this process clean and straightforward. I also do a quick visual inspection of the system for any obvious issues, though none have appeared in 10 months of operation.

Every few months, I test water hardness with inexpensive test strips to verify performance. Results have been consistently excellent, giving confidence that the system is operating as designed. The SoftPro Valve tracks total water usage and can alert to any performance changes that might indicate service needs.

The most significant maintenance task was cleaning the brine tank after about 8 months. This involved shutting down the system, removing residual salt, and cleaning the tank with fresh water. The process took about an hour and was straightforward with the provided instructions. This is recommended annually to maintain optimal performance and prevent salt bridging issues.

SoftPro's customer support has been responsive the few times I've contacted them with questions. Their technical team clearly understands their products and provided helpful guidance about optimizing settings for our local water conditions. The 10-year warranty provides peace of mind for long-term ownership.
Honest Assessment: What Could Be Better
While I'm genuinely satisfied with the SoftPro Elite HE, no system is perfect, and there are a few areas where improvements could enhance the ownership experience. Being honest about limitations helps set realistic expectations for potential buyers.

The initial investment is substantial – this isn't a budget system, and the upfront cost requires a long-term perspective to justify. While the operational savings help offset this over time, the initial cash outlay of several thousand dollars isn't insignificant for most households. Budget-conscious buyers might need to consider financing options or save up for the purchase.

Salt handling remains a physical task that some might find burdensome. While 40-pound bags aren't excessively heavy, they do require lifting and pouring every 6-8 weeks. Older adults or those with physical limitations might need assistance with salt loading, or they could consider smaller bag sizes despite the higher per-pound cost.

Space requirements, while reasonable, still demand adequate utility room area for the tank, salt storage, and service access. In homes with very limited utility space, finding suitable installation locations might be challenging. The system also requires electrical and drain connections that might not be available in all potential installation areas.

The regeneration process, while quiet, does use water and temporarily reduces capacity.

For very large households or those with unusual usage patterns, timing regeneration cycles to avoid peak demand periods requires some planning. The system handles this automatically, but understanding your household's water usage patterns helps optimize performance.
