Three options cover most private events, and they produce genuinely different evenings. Picking the wrong one is the most expensive mistake in the whole planning process, because everything else is built on top of it.



Home is the default and it works better than people give it credit for, within limits. Up to about fifteen people, a home is the best option available. It is free, it is comfortable, it is familiar, and guests relax faster in a place that feels lived in. Above twenty it starts to strain: bathroom queues, nowhere to put coats, people trapped in the kitchen. Above thirty it stops working entirely.



The hidden costs of home are worth naming. You clean before. You clean after, which is worse. You have no staff, so you are working all evening instead of attending your own party. And you carry the noise risk personally, with neighbours you will still live next to next week.



Restaurants solve the work problem completely. Somebody else cooks, serves, and clears. For a group that wants to eat, talk and go home, this is close to ideal, and a private room or a reserved section costs less than people assume outside peak season.



What restaurants do not do is flexibility. The evening has a shape set by service: arrival, courses, dessert, bill. Music is usually theirs, volume is usually theirs, and anything involving movement or performance is usually impossible. If you want dancing, a restaurant will disappoint you. If you want conversation over good food, nothing else comes close.



Lofts and event spaces sit in the middle and have become the standard answer for groups of twenty to sixty. You get an empty box with power, sound and usually some lighting, and you fill it with whatever you want. That flexibility is the entire value proposition.



The flexibility is also the trap. An empty space is empty. Everything that makes a restaurant feel finished, the furniture, the lighting, the service, has to be brought in or arranged by you. People book a loft expecting atmosphere and discover they have rented a concrete room with good windows. The photographs on the listing were taken by someone who spent a day dressing it.



So the real question when comparing a loft is not the hourly rate, it is what comes with it. Tables and chairs, or extra? Sound system, or your own? Any lighting beyond overhead? Kitchen or just a sink? Someone on site or a key handed over? Two lofts at the same price can differ by half the cost again once you add what one includes and the other does not.



A rough guide by headcount, assuming a typical evening.



Up to fifteen: home, unless you specifically want to be a guest at your own event.



Fifteen to twenty five: restaurant if the evening is centred on eating, loft if it is centred on anything else.



Twenty five to sixty: loft or event space, almost always.



Sixty and up: a proper venue with staff, and start looking earlier than feels necessary.



One factor that overrides all of the above: what the evening is for. A milestone birthday where people will make speeches needs a room where everyone can hear one person. A reunion where the point is catching up needs enough separate corners for small groups. Decide what the evening is actually for before you decide where it happens, and the choice usually makes itself.
