Ask ten people what made an evening feel good and none of them will say lighting. Ask them to describe the room and every single one will describe the light.



This is the strange thing about lighting at private events. It does more to set the mood than music, decoration or food, and it is the element people spend the least time on. Usually because the default is so easy: leave the ceiling lights on and get on with things.



The ceiling light is the problem. Overhead lighting at full brightness is designed for cleaning a room, not enjoying one. It flattens faces, it makes everything visible including the mess in the corner, and it signals to the brain that this is a functional space. You can have good music, good company and good food, and the room will still feel like somewhere you are passing through.



Turning it off is the single biggest improvement available.



What replaces it needs to come from multiple points at low height. Table lamps, floor lamps, anything at or below eye level. Three or four sources spread around a room produce pools of light and areas of shadow, and that variation is what makes a space feel intimate. One source, however warm, just makes a dimmer version of the same flat room.



Colour temperature is worth understanding because it costs nothing to get right. Bulbs are sold with a number measured in kelvins. Anything around 2700 is warm and yellowish, the colour of an old filament bulb. 4000 and up gets progressively whiter and colder. For an evening you want the low end. Swapping a few bulbs before guests arrive takes ten minutes and changes the entire character of the room.



String lights have become a cliché but they work, and they work because they do exactly what is described above: many small sources at varying heights, warm colour, low intensity. Run them along a wall rather than across the ceiling. Ceiling runs put the light back overhead, which is what you were trying to escape.

Flame flickers, and the eye reads flicker as alive. Even a few on a table shifts the feeling of a room. Put them where they will not be knocked over, which is not the edge of a table where people set down glasses.



If you want colour, be careful. Coloured lighting in a small space can tip quickly into looking like a cheap venue. A single accent, a lamp with a coloured bulb pointed at a wall, reads as deliberate. Four different colours from four directions reads as a mistake. Restraint is what separates the two.



Practical sequence for a room you are preparing tonight.



Turn off the overhead. Switch on every lamp you own. Walk around and look for dark corners, then add or move a source to fill them, because a completely dark corner reads as neglected rather than moody. Put one light source near where food will be, because people do want to see what they are eating. And leave the bathroom and hallway brighter than the main room, because those are the places where people need to function.



One thing worth planning: how you will change it later. An evening that starts as dinner and ends as dancing wants different light at each stage. Being able to switch off two of your four sources when the music comes up gives you a second room without moving anything. Smart bulbs make this easier but a well placed switch does the same job.



The whole thing costs less than the drinks and guests will tell you the place looked great without ever working out why.
