A useful helmet review goes beyond first impressions covering fit, weight, noise, ventilation, visor quality and long-term behaviour. A review should mention certification and construction because a helmet can look good but still fall short on safety standards. The best reviews treat appearance, comfort and certification as separate scores rather than blending them into one vague rating.

What is the Distinguished Gentleman's Ride? The Distinguished Gentleman's Ride is a global charity event where riders dress in classic style and ride vintage or classic-styled motorcycles to raise money for men's mental health and prostate cancer research.

An open face helmet leaves the face exposed and is often chosen for shorter trips, city riding or a classic look. Whatever the format, the helmet must fit and certify because a badly fitting open face helmet is less useful than a well-fitting full face. Open face and full face helmets answer different riding needs and the best choice depends on more than appearance.

The standard is a baseline rather than a guarantee of the best possible protection it sets minimum performance levels every road-legal helmet in Europe must meet. Riders sometimes assume a more expensive helmet is automatically safer but price usually reflects materials, finish and positioning rather than a large jump in impact performance. ECE 22.06 is a useful filter when choosing a helmet because it removes products that have not been independently tested.

Can I use a helmet after dropping it? A significant drop can compress the inner liner even if the shell looks fine. If the helmet has taken a hard knock, replace it. Minor bumps from normal handling are less likely to cause damage.

The standard is a baseline rather than a guarantee of the best possible protection it sets minimum performance levels every road-legal helmet in Europe must meet. Where the older standard focused on direct impact absorption the newer version adds rotational force testing and covers more of the helmet surface. A certified helmet carries a label inside the shell showing the standard number and a homologation code that identifies the tested model.

A long oval head and a round head can need different models even when the measured numbers match. The first step is to measure around the widest part of the head just above the eyebrows and ears. When a helmet is the right size it feels snug all the way round without any painful pressure point. A helmet that rotates easily on the head is too loose no matter what the size label says.

Investing time in helmet choice pays off every ride and a proper fit with current certification is the non-negotiable starting point. Choosing a helmet combines practical safety with personal style and the best choice fits properly, carries the right certification and suits the riding you actually do. A helmet should be matched to the rider, not just the bike because certification and fit matter more than branding alone.

For riders, the appeal is partly practical and partly emotional because a well-made British helmet fits a certain idea of quality and heritage. The story behind the object becomes part of the purchase even if the rider is not British themselves. Small-scale British manufacturing tends to value longevity over novelty so the workshop focuses on getting the core product right and improving it gradually. A British-made helmet often carries the influence of the local riding scene including climate, road surfaces and the style of motorcycling popular in the UK.
