For a trade buyer troubleshooting inconsistent hot water on an otherwise healthy system, checking the heater's rating against the cylinder's actual capacity is a faster diagnostic step than assuming a fault with the element itself. Matching the two properly, rather than replacing like-for-like from whatever failed, is usually what actually resolves the complaint.

The kilowatt rating printed on an electric shower's box is the single number most buyers look at first, and it is also the most misunderstood. A higher kW rating does not mean a more powerful shower in every sense; it means the unit can heat a given flow of water through a larger temperature rise. Those two things, flow rate and temperature rise, are locked together by the electrical supply available, and pushing one up necessarily limits the other.

The heating element is the part doing the actual work, raising the temperature of the water as it passes through the unit, and it is also the part most exposed to hard water. In areas with harder mains supply, elements pick up scale over time in exactly the way any heating element does, which reduces efficiency and eventually causes failure, showing up as a shower that runs cold, runs lukewarm, or trips out shortly after being switched on.

Water pressure and flow available at the shower's cold feed matter just as much as the electrics. An electric shower can only heat the water that reaches it; a poor incoming flow rate limits performance regardless of how high the kW rating goes, since there is simply less water for the unit to raise in temperature.
