Feeding costs for reptiles rarely stay flat over an animal's lifetime, and livefood is often the part of the budget that shifts the most as an animal grows. Planning for that change, rather than being caught out by it, makes ongoing costs a lot easier to manage.

Livefood waste, insects that die before they're used or are left over after a feed, is a common frustration for reptile keepers, and it's almost always down to a mismatch between order quantity and what a collection actually gets through in a given period, rather than anything more complicated.

Supplement dusting is the practice of coating livefood in a fine powder, usually a calcium or multivitamin product, immediately before it's offered. It's one of the most commonly used feeding practices in reptile keeping, and it's typically talked about alongside gut-loading, because the two work together rather than as alternatives.

Where dusting frequency and specific products fit into an individual animal's diet varies a great deal depending on the species, its age, and its housing setup, which is exactly the kind of detail that's best worked out with a reptile-experienced vet or a knowledgeable specialist retailer rather than a generic guide. What's useful to understand at a general level is simply that dusting exists as a practice, why it's typically paired with gut-loading rather than used on its own, and that it's part of routine feeding rather than something reserved for animals with an existing problem.
