What does ECE 22.06 actually test? ECE 22.06 tests impact absorption across more of the helmet shell than the older standard, and it includes rotational force testing. A certified helmet carries a label inside the shell with the standard number and a homologation code.

A helmet that rotates easily on the head is too loose no matter what the size label says. A long oval head and a round head can need different models even when the measured numbers match. The first step is to measure around the widest part of the head just above the eyebrows and ears.

Vision and strap position matter too because the visor should give a clear field of view and the chin strap should sit comfortably. Handcrafted helmets appeal to riders who value individual finish, smaller batches, and the human judgement involved in shaping and inspecting each piece. They often come from smaller workshops with a distinct design identity.

Polycarbonate is the most affordable option common in entry-level helmets, tough and easy to mould but usually heavier. Once compressed, the liner does not recover which is why a helmet that has taken a hit needs replacing even if the shell looks intact. The liner inside the shell is just as important as the shell itself because expanded polystyrene foam absorbs impact energy by compressing.

Wheels and Waves in Biarritz brings together surfing, art and motorcycling in a coastal setting that favours lifestyle over competition. Motorcycle culture is kept alive by events as much as by products because rallies, shows and charity rides give riders a reason to gather. A helmet on a mannequin tells one story but the same helmet on a rider at a coastal rally tells another.

A closer look at made to order helmets Made to order does not mean made outside the rules the helmet still has to pass the same certification tests as an off-the-shelf model. The wait is longer than buying from stock and that is part of the point. A made to order helmet lets a rider move beyond the standard catalogue by working with the maker on shell, lining, colours and finishes. The process starts with measurements and a conversation about intended use because a daily commuter may need different choices than a Sunday rider.

For some, the custom process is as enjoyable as receiving the helmet because choosing finishes and following the build creates a connection to the object.

A review should mention certification and construction because a helmet can look good but still fall short on safety standards. Noise and ventilation affect comfort too with a quiet helmet reducing fatigue on fast roads and good airflow keeping the rider cool. Fit is the most personal element because a reviewer with a round head may love a helmet that feels tight on a long oval head.

There is no single helmet that suits every rider which leaves room for specialist makers who build for a particular kind of motorcyclist. A well-made helmet carries more than a certification label it carries the design decisions that balance protection with wearability over a long ride. Riders who care about gear notice the details the shell shape, the lining material and the finish quality all add up to something that matters.

What matters in handcrafted helmet construction The trade-off is time because a helmet shaped and inspected by hand cannot be produced as quickly as one on a high-volume line. A handcrafted workshop tends to run smaller batches which lets the maker experiment with colourways without a huge production commitment. Handcrafting a helmet does not mean rejecting modern methods it means the shaping, finishing and checking stages involve people who can spot problems early.

Motorcycle culture is kept alive by events as much as by products because rallies, shows and charity rides give riders a reason to gather. Brands aligned with Wheels and Waves often release limited products around the event and a helmet launched there carries that cultural association. The Distinguished Gentleman's Ride is one of the best known events asking riders to dress in classic style and ride vintage or classic-styled bikes. Smaller local runs and bike nights matter too because recommendations pass by word of mouth in those settings.
