Wheels and Waves in Biarritz brings together surfing, art and motorcycling in a coastal setting that favours lifestyle over competition. Smaller local runs and bike nights matter too because recommendations pass by word of mouth in those settings. The Distinguished Gentleman's Ride is one of the best known events asking riders to dress in classic style and ride vintage or classic-styled bikes.

Carbon fibre is lighter and stiffer than fibreglass, but it is usually more expensive. Fibreglass sits in the middle for weight and cost, and is common in high-end helmets. Both can pass the same certification tests.

Is an open face helmet legal on UK roads? Yes, an open face helmet is legal on UK roads provided it meets the required certification standard, such as ECE 22.06. It offers less facial coverage than a full face helmet, which is a choice the rider must weigh.

What matters in helmet technology Integrated communications are another area of change with riders wanting Bluetooth systems built in rather than clamped on afterwards. Recent years have seen more attention paid to rotational impact communication integration and materials that reduce weight without sacrificing strength. New composite blends allow thinner, lighter shells that still pass the same tests and reduce neck strain on long rides. None of this replaces the fundamentals because a helmet still needs to fit, certify and protect.

A closer look at british helmet making The same emphasis on finish and fit travels well and many international riders seek out British makers for their design sensibility. The story behind the object becomes part of the purchase even if the rider is not British themselves. A helmet that rotates easily on the head is too loose no matter what the size label says. Fit is the part of helmet choice that cannot be outsourced to a review because head shape varies as much as head circumference. Wearing the helmet for a few minutes reveals problems that a quick try-on will miss. A long oval head and a round head can need different models even when the measured numbers match.

The first step is to measure around the widest part of the head just above the eyebrows and ears. A long oval head and a round head can need different models even when the measured numbers match. A helmet that rotates easily on the head is too loose no matter what the size label says. Vision and strap position matter too because the visor should give a clear field of view and the chin strap should sit comfortably.

A closer look at helmet care A helmet lasts longer when treated with the same care as any protective equipment since repeated drops, heat and harsh chemicals shorten the life of the materials inside. Household solvents and strong detergents can damage paint and trim and they have no place near a removable liner. Storage matters as much as cleaning because a helmet left in direct sunlight or on a hot dashboard degrades faster.

The standard is a baseline rather than a guarantee of the best possible protection it sets minimum performance levels every road-legal helmet in Europe must meet. ECE 22.06 is the current European helmet standard and it replaced ECE 22.05 with a broader set of tests. A certified helmet carries a label inside the shell showing the standard number and a homologation code that identifies the tested model.

Open face helmets are popular in this scene because they fit the stripped-back style of the bikes. The helmet is one visible thread in a larger picture that includes fundraising and awareness around men's health. Events like the Distinguished Gentleman's Ride bring the community together for a cause as well as a ride. The scene values individuality so riders spend time choosing leathers, gloves and helmets that feel personal.
